Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCDD) Testing
1. Introduction to Hexabromocyclododecane
Hexabromocyclododecane, abbreviated as HBCD or HBCDD, is a white crystalline substance with high bromine content. It is a cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon compound with the molecular formula C12H18Br6. Classified as a persistent organic pollutant (POP), it is a synthetic chemical that persists in the environment, accumulates through the biological food chain (bioaccumulation), and poses risks to both the environment and human health. Its hazards to humans are primarily manifested in its persistence, long-range transport, and bioaccumulative properties.
HBCDD has poor thermal stability but good UV stability. It begins to decompose and release HBr at 150°C, with dehydrobromination becoming intense at 190°C. Its melting point typically ranges between 175–195°C, with a low-melting form at 167–168°C and a high-melting form at 195–196°C. HBCDD has extremely low solubility in water, with a solubility of 65.6 μg/L at 20°C. It is soluble in organic solvents such as methanol, ethanol, acetone, and amyl acetate. Its primary use is as a flame retardant.
2. Main Applications
Hexabromocyclododecane is a high-bromine cycloaliphatic additive flame retardant. It is the world's third-largest brominated flame retardant after polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA). It is highly effective in preventing the ignition of plastic products and textiles. With characteristics such as low usage, excellent flame retardancy, and minimal impact on material physical properties, it is mainly used in polypropylene plastics and fibers, as well as in polystyrene foam for flame retardancy. It can also be applied in flame-retardant finishing of polyester fabrics and flame-retardant treatment of vinyl-coated double-sided leather. As an additive flame retardant, it is suitable for polystyrene, unsaturated polyester, polycarbonate, polypropylene, synthetic rubber, and more.
3. Regulatory Status
Year | Regulations | Restrictions |
2016 | EU Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) Regulation | Listed in Appendix A as a prohibited substance. Substances, mixtures, or articles containing HBCDD exceeding 100 mg/kg are banned from the EU market. |
2016 | China | Prohibited the production, use, import, and export of HBCDD. However, for its use in expanded polystyrene and extruded polystyrene in buildings (primarily as a flame retardant), production, use, import, and export are permitted during the validity period of specific exemptions. The exemption period原则上 ends five years after the amendment takes effect in China (December 25, 2021). |
2021 | China | Comprehensive ban on the production and use of HBCDD. |
